It was the second trip to the DL this season for the 30-year-old Chavez, who didn't make his season debut until May 29 after back and shoulder surgery during the offseason. He had been limited to designated hitter duty since June 22.

Chavez sat out the three-game weekend series with San Francisco and went 1-for-8 with a two-run double in the first two games of Oakland's series with the Los Angeles Angels.

Bankston, who started at first base Wednesday in his major-league debut, hit .275 with 14 homers and 51 RBIs in 70 games for Triple-A Sacramento. He was a fourth-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2002 amateur draft, was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals last Sept. 21 and then claimed off waivers again by the A's on Nov. 28.
