Phillies' Manuel to attend mother's funeral Friday

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel will not miss any NLCS games to attend the funeral of his mother, June, who passed away before Game 2 on Friday.

The Phillies said June Manuel died Friday morning at Roanoke (Va.) Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 87.

The team announced Saturday that Manuel would leave after Wednesday's Game 5 in Los Angeles. He will take a private plane to Roanoke, Va., for the services. The viewing will be Thursday with the funeral Friday morning.

Manuel is scheduled to return to Philadelphia by 5 p.m. Friday for Game 6, if necessary.

The Phillies hold a 2-0 edge in the series which continues Sunday in Los Angeles.

Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino found out after Game 2 his grandmother died early Friday. He hopes to attend the funeral in Hawaii, which the Phillies said will be scheduled on an off day. No arrangements have been made.
