The right-hander had been out nearly two months because of a right shoulder injury. He had lost his last seven decisions. Penny made his first start since allowing seven runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings at Detroit on June 14.

Right-hander Brian Falkenborg was designated for assignment to make room for Penny. Falkenborg was 2-2 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 games with the Dodgers.
