Silva is the property of the Monterrey franchise, and went 7-8 with a 4.21 ERA for that team last year. He threw well in winter ball, pitching for Mazatlan; in 16 games, Silva had a 2.54 ERA, allowing 31 hits and striking out 29 in 35 innings.

Last year, the Yankees signed Alfredo Aceves, who pitched effectively in the minors before getting called up to the majors and starting four games and appearing in relief in two others. In 30 innings in the majors, the 26-year-old Aceves has a 2.40 ERA, with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks.
