Astros sign Lo, franchise's first Taiwanese pitcher

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros signed pitcher Chia-Jen Lo to a minor league contract on Friday, making the 22-year-old the franchise's first Taiwanese player.

Primarily a closer, Lo is currently at the Chinese Cultural University and will join the Astros at spring training.

Lo pitched for Taiwan at the Beijing Olympics, allowing one earned run in two innings of relief against China. He has played in several other international tournaments, including the 2008 World University Championships.
